Children tortured, exiled and killed in Nigeria for being "Witches"

Some of this might be disturbing....

Along the southern edge of West Africa, countless children (many under the age of 10) are abused, abandoned, tortured and even murdered every day by parents, neighbours and religious preachers.

Why?

Because they have been denounced as witches.

A death in the family, it is the fault of the witches.

A failed crop, it is the fault of the witches.

Mania, depression and poverty, it is the fault of the witches.

“Witches” are "identified" by religious leaders at extremist churches where Christianity and traditional beliefs have combined to produce a deep-rooted belief in, and fear of, witchcraft. The priests spread the message that child-witches bring destruction, disease and death to their families. And they say that, once possessed, children can cast spells and inflict it on others others.

Once identified, preists have been known to use tactics such as burning, poisoning, beating the child , chaining them up, even burying them alive in order to get a confession or punish them. The children can find themselves locked in small, dark rooms for weeks, deprived of sleep, food and sunlight.

Imagine the witch trials of the medieval times and you’re pretty close.

Some parents of these poor children pay enormous sums of money for a “deliverance” (exorcism), often it will be all that they have. In many cases the pastor will claim that the witch will need a second, third and fourth deliverance, which the impoverished families can not afford. During the "deliverance" ceremonies, the children are shaken violently, dragged around the room and have potions poured into their eyes. If a child can’t be cured in this way then the child will often be exlied or killed.

The resulting homeless children are extremely vulnerable to the serious human-trafficking problem, rape and abuse. Not to mention the mental scarring of being alone and homeless at such a young age.

It’s not merely a case of evil, brainwashing priests being blindly followed by worshippers.

The combination of economic, agricultural, social and political unrest in the country creates a massive amount of tension. Things are going wrong and people want a reason for it, distrust for the government makes these people turn to another source for answers.

There is an organisation out there to help them called Stepping Stones Nigeria.

Basically they take these children out of danger, give them a home and offer some rehabilitation from the trauma they have suffered.

SSN is still a baby charity and really needs to expand. They need your money and so do the children.

Please at least check it out and help stop this insanity.

Did you watch the Channel 4 documentary on this? I think it's on 4OD if you missed it. It was really, really sad.

What made me angry the most is that withcraft belief is one which permeates throughout African belief, yet it is due to a select few extremeists that it is being combated in this way. In other tribes withcraft is something outwith individual's control - a result of jealousy almost. However it is accepted as a norm and never, ever solved through child abuse. The fact this abuse is allowed to continue made me so angry.

Yeah I didn't watch it til after I wrote this which is a shame as it probably would've helped me.
It's so disgusting what humans can do to each other, I know people say that "they don't know any better"...but seriously? Ignorance is not an excuse for being inhuman, these people aren't stupid because they happen to live in a disadvantaged country.
GAH, I just want to DO something about it....dya ever feel that being just one person isn't enough?

And sometimes the "religious" and "Christian" ones are more "evil" than any of these others... like the ones who "do witchcraft" and what-not. I say this a lot and this journal right here proves my point. That's the same as these preachers and overly-religious people saying that death penalty is evil. Pssht. Hello?! Does it not state in the bible that death penalty is a good thing, all religious one?
Jesus said that no one has the right to discriminate or [leave out] anybody else unless that person has never sinned. That would be no one! Isn't it terrifying that society could have been the same here, in America? (and I speak for those who actually live in America, or any other sane place that doesn't jump to crazy assumptions). I mean, thankfully, places like the USA are a tad more open-minded and accept people for what they are, usually. People think Wicca is "baddd" or "evil!" but it is not. Wiccans don't perform evil actions such as causing diseases and killing. And if a Wiccan person does.. "do that", it is purely by coincidence that they are Wiccan. And truly, the reason for them trying to kill their family is because they are insane or mentally troubled, OBVIOUSLY.
GOD! You preachers are supposed to say and encourage what the Christian religious is, not completely go against it! And no where does it say to torture little children or any people for that matter because of your completely FOOLISH assumptions! Even if the person truly is Wiccan, Atheist, Jewish, Atogonistic, what-have-you, it is not our duty as sinful humans to put them to death! Even if you are Christian, you should know better than to think that's how it should be!

I am ashamed of 89% of the people I was put on this earth with, people like THESE being the core of my shame.
